Scalp Hair Growth Rate

What Causes Slow Hair Growth?

Slow hair growth can have various causes, just like most other symptoms.  Finding the true cause means ruling out or confirming each possibility – in other words, diagnosis.

Diagnose your symptoms now!
  • check your overall health status
  • have a doctor review your case (optional)
  • identify any nutritional deficiencies

Diagnosis is usually a complex process due to the sheer number of possible causes and related symptoms.  In order to diagnose slow hair growth, we could:

  • Research the topic
  • Find a doctor with the time
  • Use a diagnostic computer system.
The process is the same, whichever method is used.

Step 1: List all Possible Causes

We begin by identifying the disease conditions which have "slow hair growth" as a symptom.  For example, manganese need.

Step 2: Build a Symptom Checklist

We then identify all possible symptoms and risk factors of each possible cause, and check the ones that apply:
very slow fingernail growth
severe fatigue after slight exertion
elevated MCH
poor milk production
macrocytic red cells
... and so on

Step 3: Rule Out or Confirm each Possible Cause

A differential diagnosis of your symptoms and risk factors finds the likely cause of slow hair growth.

Arriving at a Correct Diagnosis

The Analyst™ is our online diagnosis tool that learns all about you through a straightforward process of multi-level questioning, providing diagnosis at the end.

In the Hair-Related Symptoms section of the questionnaire, The Analyst™ will ask the following question about scalp hair growth rate:
Approximately how fast does your head (scalp) hair grow? Hair normally grows about 1/2 inch (1.25cm) per month or 6 inches (15cm) per year.
Possible responses:
→ Very slowly (under 3 inches or 8cm per year)
→ Slowly (3-6 inches or 8-15cm per year)
→ Average / not applicable / I have no idea
→ Quickly (6-12 inches or 15-30cm per year)
→ Very quickly (over 12 inches or 30cm per year)
Based on your response to this question, which may indicate very slow scalp hair growth, slow scalp hair growth, average scalp hair growth, rapid scalp hair growth or very rapid scalp hair growth, The Analyst™ will consider possibilities such as Manganese Requirement.
