The extremely aromatic spice, Clove / Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum), is native to Southeast Asia and is now cultivated around the tropical areas of the world. The major constituent of cloves is its oil, eugenol. Cloves are known to be antihistaminic, antiseptic (against a range of bacteria), anthelmintic and larvicidal.
Cloves can be found as a dried spice or an oil. Mouthwash preparations or undiluted essential oil (dentistry) is "Approved" the German Commission E for various oral mucosal inflammatory conditions.
Cloves have been used extensively in dentistry for symptomatic relief of toothaches, dry sockets, and as a component of fillings.
