An herb most people have used for cooking, Celery (Apium graveolens) is not well known for its medicinal uses. Celery seeds are thought to be the most medicinal part of the plant, as they contain several important oils, coumarins and several oleoresins.
Celery seed or its extracts are available in many different formulations, rarely alone.
Celery seeds have been used as diuretics, sedatives, anti-convulsants, anti-hypertensives, and for relief of rheumatoid arthritis. Any of these applications seems to be supported by historical evidence, and celery seeds are considered to be safe, but it is listed as "Unapproved" by the German Commission E for these conditions.
