Glossary: Ischemia

Definition
Localized tissue anemia due to obstruction of the inflow of arterial blood. A decrease in the blood supply to a bodily organ, tissue, or part caused by constriction or obstruction of the blood vessels.

Also: Ischemic

The Condition
"...Carotid artery stenosis can also cause transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), also called "mini strokes..."

Cigarette Smoke Damage

The Condition
"...Cigarette smoking exacerbates both the frequency and duration of ischemia in patients with CAD..."

Coronary Disease / Heart Attack

Relationship to EFA (Essential Fatty Acid) Type 3 Requirement

Diarrhea

The Condition
"...Less common causes of chronic bloody diarrhea include ischemia, infections (Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium difficile, Entamoeba histolytica, Yersinia and Cytomegalovirus), radiation or chemotherapy, and colon cancer or polyps (villous adenoma)..."

Folic Acid

As A Treatment
"...There is some suggestion that it helps in ischemia, with reports of improved blood flow to the eyes and improved vision in those with circulatory deficits..."

General Weakness

The Condition
"...Sudden muscle weakness and loss of function in one area of the body can indicate a serious problem within the brain (such as a stroke or transient ischemic attack) or spinal cord or with a specific nerve in the body..."

Hemorrhoids

The Condition
"...Finally, with full westernization of the diet, ischemic heart disease, diverticular disease, hiatal hernia, and cancer become prominent..."

"Hypertension, diabetes and heart disease are risk factors for reduced circulation in the brain, sometimes called ischemic vascular dementia (IVD)..."

Stress

Relationship to Coronary Disease / Heart Attack
"Stress may increase magnesium excretion and the resulting temporary magnesium depletion may make the heart more sensitive to electrical abnormalities and vascular spasm that could lead to cardiac ischemia..."

The Condition
"...Approximately 75-80% of strokes are of the clotting (ischemic) variety, while the remainder (hemorrhagic strokes) are due to bleeding from broken blood vessels..."

Our Question about your height (male)
