Progestin Use

Evaluating Risk Factors: Progestin Use

Evaluating your likely current (and near future) state of health means taking into account the risk factors — such as progestin use — that affect you.   Our medical diagnosis tool, The Analyst™, identifies major risk factors by asking the right questions.

Diagnose your symptoms now!

  • let The Analyst™ find what's wrong
  • learn what you should be doing right now
If you indicate having used hormones, The Analyst™ will ask further questions including this one:
Have you used progestins (such as Provera or Depo-Provera/DMPA)? Prempro contains a progestin also.
Possible responses:
→ No / don't know
→ For under 1 year, but not any more
→ For 1 or more years, but not any more
→ Current use for under 1 year
→ Current use for 1 or more years

The Diagnostic Process

Based on your response to this question, which may indicate either past progestin use or progestin use, The Analyst™ will use differential diagnosis to consider possibilities such as Phlebitis / Thrombophlebitis.  The use of synthetic progesterones (progestins) – but not natural progesterone – will increase the likelihood of deep vein thrombophlebitis by 3 to 4 times.

The Analyst™ will of course also rule out issues such as Amenorrhea if possible.  Injected progestins have been the standard form of injected contraceptive – and are very effective – but they can have severe effects on the menstrual cycle.  Like other progestin contraceptives, Depo-Provera prevents pregnancy by halting ovulation, thickening the cervical mucus, and stopping the implantation of fertilized eggs in the uterine lining.
