Sweaty Palms

What Causes Sweaty Palms?

Sweaty palms can have various causes, ranging in severity from 'minor' to 'life-threatening'.  Finding the true cause means ruling out or confirming each possibility – in other words, diagnosis.

  • learn what you should be doing right now

Diagnosis is usually a complex process due to the sheer number of possible causes and related symptoms.  In order to diagnose sweaty palms, we could:

  • Research the topic
  • Find a doctor with the time
  • Use a diagnostic computer system.
The process is the same, whichever method is used.

Step 1: List all Possible Causes

We begin by identifying the disease conditions which have "sweaty palms" as a symptom.  Here are eight of many possibilities (more below):
  • Low Estrogens
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  • High Female Testosterone
  • Stress
  • Kidney Disease
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Lymphatic Congestion
  • Hyperthyroidism

Step 2: Build a Symptom Checklist

We then identify all possible symptoms and risk factors of each possible cause, and check the ones that apply:
jaundiced skin
specific muscle weakness
much reduced sense of smell
short-term memory failure
being lean or underweight
very strong appetite
weak sexual desire
poor tolerance of sugars
strong-smelling urine
sexual abuse during childhood
swollen cervical nodes
constant bowel movement changes
... and more than 150 others

Step 3: Rule Out or Confirm each Possible Cause

A differential diagnosis of your symptoms and risk factors finds the likely cause of sweaty palms:
Cause Probability Status
Guillain-Barre Syndrome 92% Confirm
High Female Testosterone 24% Unlikely
Hyperthyroidism 14% Unlikely
Low Estrogens 3% Ruled out
Kidney Disease 0% Ruled out
Stress 0% Ruled out
Lymphatic Congestion 0% Ruled out
Hypoglycemia 0% Ruled out
* This is a simple example to illustrate the process
