Unexplained Loss Of Muscle Mass

What Causes Muscle Loss?

Muscle loss can have various causes, ranging in severity from 'minor' to 'very serious'.  Finding the true cause means ruling out or confirming each possibility – in other words, diagnosis.

  • learn what you should be doing right now

Diagnosis is usually a complex process due to the sheer number of possible causes and related symptoms.  In order to diagnose muscle loss, we could:

  • Research the topic
  • Find a doctor with the time
  • Use a diagnostic computer system.
The process is the same, whichever method is used.

Step 1: List all Possible Causes

We begin by identifying the disease conditions which have "muscle loss" as a symptom.  Here are four possibilities:
  • Low HGH
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Male Menopause
  • Premature Aging

Step 2: Build a Symptom Checklist

We then identify all possible symptoms and risk factors of each possible cause, and check the ones that apply:
very great unexplained weight loss
joint pain/swelling/stiffness
minor cold weather muscle spasms
low energy/stamina
severe muscle weakness
poor muscular strength
very great unexplained weight gain
suspected muscular dystrophy
reduced sense of smell
reduced skin elasticity
some loss of muscle tone
increased focal length
... and more than 10 others

Step 3: Rule Out or Confirm each Possible Cause

A differential diagnosis of your symptoms and risk factors finds the likely cause of muscle loss:
Cause Probability Status
Premature Aging 92% Confirm
Low HGH 12% Unlikely
Muscular Dystrophy 2% Ruled out
Male Menopause 1% Ruled out

Arriving at a Correct Diagnosis

The Analyst™ is our online diagnosis tool that learns all about you through a straightforward process of multi-level questioning, providing diagnosis at the end.

If you indicate having muscle problems / disease, The Analyst™ will ask further questions including this one:
Does it seem like you have lost muscle mass, for reasons other than getting less exercise?
Possible responses:
→ No / maybe / don't know
→ Yes, some loss of muscle mass
→ Yes, significant loss of muscle mass
→ Yes, much loss of muscle mass
Based on your response to this question, which may indicate some muscle wasting, significant muscle wasting or severe muscle atrophy, The Analyst™ will consider possibilities such as:
Muscular Dystrophy

Muscular dystrophy causes progressive weakening due to decreasing amounts of muscle mass (muscle atrophy).
