The dried ripe fruit of the tree Ficus carica are known as figs. Known since ancient times, figs are native to the Middle East but are now grown around the world. Figs have high amounts of natural sugars, mucilage, vitamins and enzymes. They are listed in the British Pharmacopoeia for their use in laxative preparations.
