Caraway
 


Caraway (Carum carvi) is best known as an ingredient in rye bread. The seed is the part used medicinally, as it contains both volatile oils and flavonoid components. Caraway is considered both carminative and stomachic. Reasons For Use


This spice is used in preparations for indigestion and related complaints. Both the oil and the seed are subjects of "Approved" German Commission E monographs for these purposes.





GLOSSARY

Bioflavonoid (Bioflavonoids, Flavonoid, Flavonoids)
Vitamin P. Any of a group of colored flavones (crystalline compounds) found next to the peel in many fruits. Essential for the stability and absorption of ascorbic acid.

Carminative
Agent relieving flatulence or gas.
