Buchu
 


Leaves of the plant Agathosma betulina or sometimes Barosma betulina are called Buchu leaves. These oil-bearing plants are native to South Africa, where they are harvested for their medicinal properties.

Function; Reasons For Use


The main active components are the volatile oils such as l-pulegone, isopulegone, diophenol (buchu camphor) and many others.

Historically, Buchu leaves have been reported to have diuretic, urinary antiseptic activity, and as a tonic for the genito-urinary system. It is still used primarily for these indications, although "Unapproved" for such by the German Commission E.

Antiseptic
Inhibiting growth of infectious organisms.

Commission E
The body of scientists and panel of experts that provides advice on herbal treatments and evaluates the safety, effectiveness and dosage of medicinal herbs; Germany's equivalent of the FDA.

Diuretic (Diuretics)
An agent increasing urine flow, causing the kidneys to excrete more than the usual amount of sodium, potassium and water.
