Heart Palpitations

What Causes Heart Palpitations?

Heart palpitations can have various causes, ranging in severity from 'minor' to 'very serious'.  Finding the true cause means ruling out or confirming each possibility – in other words, diagnosis.

Diagnosis is usually a complex process due to the sheer number of possible causes and related symptoms.  In order to diagnose heart palpitations, we could:

  • Research the topic
  • Find a doctor with the time
  • Use a diagnostic computer system.
The process is the same, whichever method is used.

Step 1: List all Possible Causes

We begin by identifying the disease conditions which have "heart palpitations" as a symptom.  Here are eight of many possibilities (more below):
  • Myocarditis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Mercury Toxicity
  • Arrhythmias
  • Stress
  • ADHD
  • PMS C
  • Caffeine Intoxication

Step 2: Build a Symptom Checklist

We then identify all possible symptoms and risk factors of each possible cause, and check the ones that apply:
loss of appetite
menstrual headaches
recurring depression
high caffeinated soda consumption
being an unsocial person
weak appetite
long work hours
absent sexual desire
low TSH
back-of-neck lymph node problems
coffee consumption
hyperthyroidism
... and more than 130 others

Step 3: Rule Out or Confirm each Possible Cause

A differential diagnosis of your symptoms and risk factors finds the likely cause of heart palpitations:
Cause Probability Status
ADHD 90% Confirm
Mercury Toxicity 23% Unlikely
Stress 22% Unlikely
Myocarditis 2% Ruled out
PMS C 2% Ruled out
Caffeine Intoxication 2% Ruled out
Hyperthyroidism 2% Ruled out
Arrhythmias 0% Ruled out

Arriving at a Correct Diagnosis

The Analyst™ is our online diagnosis tool that learns all about you through a straightforward process of multi-level questioning, providing diagnosis at the end.

In the Cardiovascular Symptoms section of the questionnaire, The Analyst™ will ask the following question about heart palpitations:
Does your heart sometimes race or palpitate such that you can feel it beating?
Possible responses:
→ No / don't know
→ Occasionally / moderately
→ Often / severely
Based on your response to this question, which may indicate heart racing/palpitations, The Analyst™ will consider possibilities such as:
Caffeine Intoxication

Caffeine intoxication can cause a rapid or 'pounding' heart rate.

Environmental Illness / MCS

Heart palpitations and dysrhythmias can be caused by chemical exposures in sensitized individuals.
