A form of porphyria caused by a deficiency in the enzyme ferrochelatase. It manifests largely in the red blood cells, which accumulate large amounts of protoporphyrin. Clinically it presents with photosensitivity felt after a short period of sun-exposure; uncommonly, patients develop liver disease as a result of protoporphyrin accumulation.
Also: Erythropoietic Protoporphyria
