Urinary Tract Infection

Definition of Urinary Tract Infection:

A bacterial infection that affects part of the urinary tract, which consists of the urethra, bladder and kidneys.  In the lower urinary tract it is known as a bladder infection (cystitis), and in the upper urinary tract it is known as a kidney infection (pyelonephritis).  Symptoms of a lower urinary tract include frequent urges to urinate and painful urination (or both); symptoms of pyelonephritis include fever and pain at the sides between the ribs and the hip, in addition to the symptoms of a lower UTI.
