Dr. Cynthia Shelby-Lane, MD

Medical background and expertise

Cynthia Shelby-Lane, MD, also known as “the agelessdoctor”, is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and Second City Comedy School in Chicago. She trained as a surgeon at the University of Texas in Houston. She practiced emergency medicine for over 23 years.  As an emergency physician, she handled life threatening emergencies at a Level One trauma center in Detroit, Michigan and she was the Director of Emergency Medicine at Hutzel Hospital for 10 years.  Her experience of dealing with life and death crises in the emergency room allowed her to see and realize the limitations of traditional medicine.  This led her to seek methods of prevention, holistic and integrative medicine, and now anti-aging medicine, before it was popular.  She is board-certified in anti-aging, alternative and complementary medicine since 1997.  She is also an oral board examiner for the American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine, and is currently completing her fellowship and master's program in Functional and Anti-Aging Medicine.  Her thesis is titled, “Laughter is Good Medicine”.  The foundation for the research of this paper will be based on current university studies, programs at cancer hospitals and cancer organizations, and interviews with top comedians and humorists.

Services

Since leaving the emergency and trauma room(s), Dr. Shelby-Lane has practiced occupational and disability medicine, and started her own private practice, Elan Anti-Aging & Longevity Center of Michigan.  The practice incorporates traditional and alternative modalities for a complementary approach to health care and healing.  Dr. Shelby-Lane treats multiple health complaints, given her experience and background in emergency and traditional medicine.  Her areas of expertise are cardiovascular disease prevention, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, detoxification, adrenal and thyroid disorders, weight management, memory and brain health, autoimmune disorders and fibromyalgia.  She uses state of the art technology to assist with the diagnosis, but applies nutritional and lifestyle interventions to the management of many disorders.  Many people seek her help to get clarification about their health disorder or to determine the next step, especially with the confusing health insurance maze and with so many people being uninsured. Shelby-Lane frequently helps people find a “Second Opinion” or alternative solutions.  She also works with experts, worldwide, providing the expertise to manage a variety of difficult health care problems, which may require a “phone” or “in-person” consultation.  Dr. Shelby-Lane is also a certified professional health coach and helps individuals and corporations with issues related to weight control, stress reduction, time management, and any health issue where the client needs help with establishing wellness.  She considers all aspects of a patient's health history and profile when making recommendations.

Dr. Shelby-Lane has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show on the topic of “Kids Killing Kids” and was featured in an award winning film called “WASTED DREAMS”, which has been used throughout the country to educate high school students about the consequences of violence.  As a result of her work with youth and teachers, educating them about violence prevention, she won an award for “WOMEN OF DISTINCTION” IN MICHIGAN in 1992.  She was also a NASA astronaut candidate and intends to pursue that dream once again, when she retires.  She has served on numerous state and national medical boards and is the past President of the American Association of Women Emergency Physicians (AAWEP), serving from 1993-1996.  She received the FDR Award for fortitude, durability and resourcefulness.  Shelby-Lane, MD has served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Wayne State University and has done clinical research on victims of violence.  She also served on the Board of Directors for The Detroit Community Health Connection for 10 years, serving the homeless and underserved to obtain much needed health care.  She also honors her commitment to serve the community-at-large, having traveled twice to the devastated areas of hurricane Katrina (New Orleans and Houston) to assist survivors with their medical needs.  Shelby-Lane, MD is a doctor, humanitarian, speaker and comedienne, working to change the health care consciousness one day at a time.  As a physician, she is committed to a healthier world.
